The city’s role became even more pivotal in 1801 when the British converted it into one the most important of the Company’s garrisons. Visit Kanpur from Lucknow to get familiar with the turn of events that took place during the Kanpur Siege in 1857.

TOUR ITINERARY

The British established the extensive Cawnpore Cantonment in the city, which was a central garrison at the time, due to its strategic location. The Cantonment sprawled over six miles along the banks of River Ganges and is believed to have contained hundreds of colonial bungalows of British officers. The barracks of the troops had a separate bazaar for each regiment. Vast gardens filled with tamarind, mango, bananas, neem, acacia and fig trees defined the landscape. The Cantonment even had a theatre, a race-course, and clubs for entertainment. Churches, chapels and schools were other necessities provided for the residents.

The Cantonment was the site of one of the most horrific sieges in the history of India’s struggle for freedom. During this tour, you will visit the areas, where the revolt was concentrated. Dip into the history of the time and learn about the significant events and locations until its conclusion, when General Havelock came into the picture and took the city back from the freedom fighters. Some of the areas covered during the tour include Wheelers’Entrenchment, All Souls Church, Bibighur(house of the lady) and the Old British Cemetery.
